The Song Thrush’s favourite food is snails, the problem being, how to get them out of the shell. These clever birds use a nicely rounded stone on which they hit the snail until the shell smashes releasing a fine meal.

This stone is known as an anvil as anyone with a resident Song Thrush in his or her garden will know. This image was a split second ‘grab shot’ shot taken before the bird flew into the base of a bush where I listened to it breaking open the shell.
